PAX is a good product. It is also a fixed one.

IKEA's PAX system is well engineered for what it is: a modular wardrobe in a handful of standard sizes at a price a custom shop cannot touch. If your wall happens to match one of those sizes, your ceiling is tall enough, and you are comfortable assembling furniture, PAX is a sensible choice. The gap opens when the room does not cooperate. Custom closets exist for the walls that are 83 inches wide, the ceilings that slope, and the people who want to stop thinking about it after installation.

When to buy PAX

Choose PAX if…

The wall fits the frames

If your opening is close to a multiple of PAX widths and your ceiling clears 93 inches with room to tilt the frame up, you lose very little to fillers.

You are renting or moving soon

PAX comes apart and moves with you. A custom closet is built into the house and stays with it.

Budget is the deciding factor

PAX will cost less. If the choice is PAX now or nothing for two years, buy PAX.

When to go custom

Choose custom if…

The room has opinions

Sloped ceilings, a window in the closet, a bulkhead, an 87-inch wall. Standard frames leave that space empty. Custom uses it.

You want it done, not assembled

One consultation, one design, one installation by people who do this every week. You inspect it before the balance is due.

You plan to stay

A lifetime warranty with no service fees only makes sense if you are still in the house. If you are, it is the difference between a closet and a piece of the home.

Bring your PAX plan to the consultation if you have one. We will measure the same wall, design the custom version in 3D while you watch, and give you an exact price in writing. Then you compare two real numbers for your actual closet, not two brochures.

FAQ

Real questions. Straight answers.

Is IKEA PAX good quality?

For a flat-pack wardrobe, yes. PAX has been in production for decades and IKEA backs the frames with a 10-year limited warranty. The trade-offs are fit, not quality: fixed sizes, filler panels, and assembly that falls to you.

Can PAX be made to look built-in?

With enough filler strips, trim, and a skilled installer, PAX can be dressed to look built-in. At that point you are paying for custom labor around a standard box. It is worth pricing the custom version before you commit to that route.

How much more does a custom closet cost than PAX?

It depends on the size and what goes inside, so we will not give you a fake average. We give you an exact price in writing for your closet at a free consultation, and you compare it to your PAX cart. For published market ranges, see our Maryland cost guide.

Does a custom closet add resale value?

Built-in storage is consistently among the features buyers ask about, and unlike freestanding wardrobes it stays with the house. We do not publish a return-on-investment figure because honest ones depend on your market and your home.
