Franchise or Local Closet Company?

The big names in custom closets are franchise systems. That is not a flaw. It is a structure, and the structure shapes your experience.

What a franchise actually is.

California Closets, Closet Factory, and Closets by Design are franchise systems. The name on the truck belongs to a national company; the business behind it is an independently owned local franchisee that pays for the brand, the marketing, and a territory. That model built the custom closet industry, and plenty of franchisees do excellent work. It also means that when you get a quote, part of what you are paying for is the system that delivered the quote. Here is how that plays out, and where a local maker is different.

The comparison

Same closet, different structure.

When a franchise is the right call

Choose a national brand if…

You want a showroom first

Franchises invest in showrooms. If you need to stand inside a finished closet today before you can picture yours, that is a real advantage, and worth the drive.

You are outside our area

We serve Montgomery, Howard, Frederick, and Prince George's Counties in Maryland, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Arlington in Virginia, and Washington, DC. Beyond that, a national brand will have someone closer.

The brand name matters to you

Some homeowners want a name they have seen for thirty years. That is a legitimate reason, and we will not talk you out of it.

When local wins

Choose a local maker if…

You want the price to be the price

No promotion calendar, no “this week only.” An exact price in writing that holds until the closet is installed.

You want to know who shows up

The people who measure, design, and install your closet work for us, not for a subcontractor we found for the job.

You want the warranty to be simple

Lifetime, no service fees, from a company whose owners you have met. If something needs attention in year eight, you call the same number.

Ask everyone this

Five questions for any closet company, including us.

  1. Is the price in writing, and does it change if I do not sign today?

  2. Who exactly installs it: your employees or a subcontractor?

  3. Will I see a 3D design of my actual closet before I commit?

  4. What does the warranty cover, for how long, and is there a service fee?

  5. When is the balance due: before the work, or after I have inspected it?

Our answers: yes and no · our employees · yes · lifetime, no fee · after you inspect it.

How it works

  1. Free in-home consultation

  2. 3D design and your exact price in writing

  3. Built in 2 to 3 weeks

  4. Installed by our own team

  5. You inspect the finished work before the balance is due

FAQ

Real questions. Straight answers.

Is California Closets a franchise?

Yes. California Closets, Closet Factory, and Closets by Design all operate as franchise systems, with locations independently owned and operated under the national brand. This is public information on each company's franchise recruitment pages.

Are franchise closets lower quality?

Not inherently. Quality depends on the franchisee, the materials they select, and the crew that installs. The franchise model affects structure and overhead more than it affects the panels. Judge any company, including us, on the design you see, the people who show up, and what the warranty says in writing.

Why would a local closet company be less expensive?

Lower fixed overhead: no royalties, no national advertising fund, no showroom program built into every quote. We do not publish a percentage difference because it varies job to job. We publish an exact price for your closet, in writing, and you compare.

Do you offer financing like the national brands?

Not at this time. We keep the price simple and put it in writing. If that changes, it will be on this site.

What does “local” mean for you?

Our workshop is in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Every closet is designed here, cut to order to our spec, assembled and staged in our workshop, and installed by our own team across the DMV. There is no corporate office in another state and no call center between you and the people doing the work.
